Microcrystalline wax is a type of wax produced by deoiling petroleum jelly as part of the petroleum refining process. Microcrystalline waxes contain a higher percentage of iso-chain alkanes (branched) and cycloalkanes than the more common paraffins, which mainly contain unbranched alkanes. It is characterized by the fineness of its crystals in sharp contrast to the larger crystals of paraffin wax. It consists of high molecular weight saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons. It is generally darker, stickier, denser, stickier, and more elastic than paraffin wax, and has a higher molecular weight and melting point. The elastic and adhesive properties of microcrystalline wax are related to the non-straight chain components. The typical microcrystalline wax has a small and thin crystal structure, making it more flexible than paraffin wax. It is often used in cosmetic formulations.

Microcrystalline waxes produced by wax refineries are typically produced to meet many ASTM specifications. These include freezing point (ASTM D938), penetration (ASTM D1321), color (ASTM D6045), and viscosity (ASTM D445). Glass-ceramics can generally be divided into two categories: laminated grade and hardened grade. Lamination grades typically have a melting point of 140-175 F (60-80 °C) and a pin penetration of 25 or higher. Hardening grades range from about 175-200 F (80-93 °C), with a penetration of 25 or less. Both grades can range in color from brown to white, depending on the degree of processing at the refinery grade.

Microcrystalline wax is derived from the refining of heavy fractions in lubricant production. This by-product must be deoiled at a wax refinery. Depending on the end use and desired specifications, the product may be stripped of odor and color (usually starting brown or dark yellow). This is usually done by filtration methods or by hydrotreating the wax material.
