Paraffin wax, also known as crystalline wax, is a mixture of hydrocarbons with 18~30 carbon atoms, mainly composed of straight-chain alkanes (about 80%~95%), and a small amount of alkanes with individual branches and monocyclic alkanes with long side chains (the total content of them is less than 20%). Paraffin wax is a kind of petroleum processed products, a kind of mineral wax and a kind of petroleum wax. It is a kind of flake or needle-like crystal obtained by solvent refining, solvent dewaxing, or wax freezing crystallization and press dewaxing of lubricating oil fraction obtained from crude oil distillation, and then sweating or solvent deoiling, clay refining or hydrogenation refining. According to the degree of refining, it can be divided into three types: fully refined paraffin, semi-refined paraffin and crude paraffin. Each type of wax is divided into different varieties according to its melting point, generally every 2ºC, such as No.52, No.54, No.56, No.58 and other brands (such as No.58 semi-refined paraffin).

They are mainly used for food, oral medicine and some products (such as wax paper, crayons, candles, carbon paper) components and packaging materials, coating materials for baking containers,  for fruit preservation, insulation of electrical components, improving rubber aging resistance and increasing flexibility, etc.It can also be used for oxidation to produce fatty acids. Crude paraffin with high oil content is mainly used for making matches, fiberboard, awning canvas, etc.
