In industry, benzene and long chain alkenes are mainly used in the acid catalyst under condensation to produce dodecyl benzene, the alkenes used include α-alkenes, normal alkenes and heterogeneous alkenes. The industrialized methods include alkane dehydrogenation method, which takes normal alkane as raw material, dehydrogenates alkene on Pt-Al2O3 catalyst, and then alkylates with benzene to produce n-dodecyl and other products. In the propylene tetramerization method, the propylene tetramerization fraction is used as raw material, under the action of phospho-diatomite catalyst, the propylene tetramerization is formed, and then with benzene under the action of aluminum trichloride catalyst, the branched chain alkylbenzene is formed, and the finished product is obtained after rectification. In addition, alkyl benzene can be produced by paraffin cleavage, chlorane and benzene condensation.

Dodecyl benzene belong to the long chain of linear alkyl benzene, room temperature is colorless transparent liquid, has fragrant smell, can happen sulfonation reaction and acylation reaction and pyrolysis reaction, is a major intermediates in the production of detergent, by linear alkyl benzene synthesis of linear alkyl benzene sulfonic acid sodium has excellent surface activity, the decontamination ability and biodegradable properties.

1. Prepare plasticizer
Alkyl sulfonyl chloride has been widely used in industry, such as used in the manufacture of synthetic detergent alkyl sulfonate, PVC resin plasticizers alkyl benzene sulfonate ester, etc., especially alkyl sulfonic acid resin (industrial T - 50 oil ester) has excellent electric properties, weatherability and low heat consumption, have been used as plasticizer a lot in all kinds of PVC products, Especially wire and cable formulations. Phenyl dodecyl benzene sulfonate was synthesized from dodecyl benzene as follows: Dodecyl benzene 1200kg, specific gravity 0.871 (15ºC), in the reaction reactor made of vinyl chloride, the reactor is equipped with lead coil for cooling, mercury arc lamp, gas distributor, thermometer and gas discharge pipe, etc. The ratio of chlorine and sulfur dioxide is 1:1.1, and after mixing, it is poured into the reactor at room temperature, and the light is turned on at the same time. The wavelength is 280nm. The ratio of light power and dodecyl benzene content is 0.8 W/kg. The reaction is heat release, the temperature is controlled by cooling water at 25ºC~32ºC, and the inflow volume of mixed gas is 30kg/h. Hydrogen chloride and a small amount of unreacted gas are generated by reaction and recovered by water spraying and hydrochloric acid through the exhaust pipe. After the residual gas was removed by drying compressed air, 1440kg dodecyl benzene sulfonyl chloride was obtained with saponification value of 163 and conversion rate of 45%.

2. Prepare surfactant
Dodecyl benzene can be used to synthesize dodecyl benzene sulfonate, such as sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate, is a common anionic surfactant, widely used in detergents, cleaners, etc. Dodecyl benzene 35mL (34.6g) was added to a 250mL four-mouth bottle equipped with a stirrer, thermometer, drip funnel and reflux condenser. The mass fraction of 98% sulfuric acid 35mL was slowly added under stirring, and the temperature did not exceed 40ºC. After adding, the temperature was raised to 60 ~ 70ºC for 2h. Cool the sulfonation mixture to 40 ~ 50ºC, slowly add an appropriate amount of water (about 15mL), pour into the sorting funnel, stand still for a moment, stratified, put off the lower layer (water and inorganic salt), keep the upper layer (organic phase). 80mL of 10% sodium hydroxide solution was prepared and added into a 250mL four-mouth bottle of about 60-70ml. The organic phase was slowly added under stirring, and the temperature was controlled at 40-50 ºC. The pH value was adjusted to 7-8 with 10% sodium hydroxide, and the total dosage of 10% sodium hydroxide was recorded. In the above reaction system, a small amount of sodium chloride was added, and after filtration, the white paste product was obtained, namely sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate. The equation is as follows.
