Paraffin wax, also Commonly called 'paraffin', is a colourless or white, tasteless, odourless, translucent waxy solid. Paraffin wax has a typical melting point between about 46°C and 68°C. Pure paraffin wax is a combustible substance and insoluble in water but soluble in petroleum solvents and stable under normal conditions of use. Paraffin has been identified as an excellent electrical insulator. It is also used in the manufacturing of paraffin papers, candles, food packaging materials, varnishes, floor polishes, to extract perfumes from flowers, in lubricants, and cosmetics. It is also used in water-proofing wood, and cork.
 

 

Specification

Paraffin wax, also known as crystalline wax, is usually a white, odorless waxy solid, melting at 47°C-64°C, density of about 0.9g/cm3, soluble in gasoline, carbon disulfide, xylene, ether, benzene, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, naphthas and other non-polar solvents, insoluble in water and methanol and other polar solvents. Pure paraffin wax is a good insulator, with a resistivity of 1013-1017 ohms · m, higher than most materials except for certain plastics (Teflon in particular). Paraffin wax is also a good heat storage material, its specific heat capacity is 2.14 -- 2.9J·g -- 1·K -- 1, melting heat is 200 -- 220J·g -- 1. The main performance indexes of paraffin wax are melting point, oil content and stability.

Melting point
Paraffin is a mixture of hydrocarbons, so it does not have the same strict melting point as pure compounds. The melting point of paraffin refers to the temperature at which the cooling of melted paraffin samples occurs for the first time on the cooling curve under specified conditions. All kinds of wax products require good temperature resistance to paraffin wax, that is, no melting or softening deformation at a specific temperature. Commercial paraffin wax is required to have a series of different melting points according to the use conditions, the use of the region and season and the difference of the use environment.

The main factor affecting the melting point of paraffin is the weight of the selected raw material fraction. The melting point of paraffin removed from the heavier fraction is higher. In addition, oil content also has a great effect on the melting point of paraffin wax, the more oil in paraffin wax, the lower its melting point.
According to the different degree of processing and refining, it can be divided into three kinds: fully refined paraffin, semi-refined paraffin and crude paraffin. Each type of wax according to the melting point, generally every 2ºC, divided into different varieties, such as 52,54,56,58 and other brands. Crude paraffin wax has a higher oil content and is mainly used for making matches, fiberboard and canvas.

Application

Crude paraffin wax is mainly used for making matches, fiberboard and canvas because of its oil content. After adding polyolefin additives to paraffin wax, its melting point is increased, its adhesion and flexibility are increased, and it is widely used in moisture-proof and waterproof wrapping paper, cardboard, surface coating of some textiles and candle production.

The paper immersed in paraffin wax can be prepared with good waterproof performance of all kinds of wax paper, can be used for food, medicine and other packaging, metal rust prevention and printing industry; Paraffin wax added to cotton yarn can make textiles soft, smooth and elastic; Paraffin wax can also be made of detergent, emulsifier, dispersant, plasticizer, grease and so on.

Fully refined paraffin wax and semi-refined paraffin wax are widely used. They are mainly used as components and packaging materials for food, oral drugs and some commodities (such as waxed paper, crayons, candles, carbon paper), as dressings for baking containers, for fruit preservation, electrical component insulation, to improve rubber anti-aging and increase flexibility, etc. It can also be used for oxidation to produce synthetic fatty acids.

Paraffin wax, as a latent heat storage material, has the advantages of large latent heat of phase transition, small volume change in solid-liquid phase transformation process, good thermal stability, no undercooling phenomenon, low price and so on. And the development of aviation, aerospace, microelectronics and optoelectronics technology, often requires that a large amount of heat dissipation generated during the working of high-power components can only be dissipated in a limited heat dissipation area and a very short time, while low-melting phase change materials can quickly reach the melting point compared with high-melting phase change materials, and make full use of latent heat to achieve temperature control. The thermal response time of paraffin wax is relatively short, so that it has been widely used in aviation, aerospace, microelectronics and other high-tech systems, as well as house energy saving and other fields.

GB 2760-96 is allowed to be used as gum jelly base agent, limited to 50.0g/kg. Foreign also used for sticky rice paper production, the amount of 6g/kg. In addition, it is also widely used for moisture-proof, stickproof and oil-proof food packaging materials. It is suitable for food gum, bubble gum, pharmaceutical gold oil and other components as well as wax (made from waxy distillate of oil or shale oil by cold pressing and other methods) that directly contact with food and medicine, such as hot carrier, demudding, pressing and polishing.
