Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a kind of organic compound, its chemical formula is C10H16N2O8, under normal temperature and pressure as a white powder. It is a chelating agent that can bind to Mg2+, Ca2+, Mn2+, Fe2+ and other divalent metal ions. Because the function of most nucleases and some requires Mg2+, it is often used as inhibitors of nucleases ; It can also be used to remove the inhibitory effect of heavy metal ions on enzymes.
White odorless, tasteless, colorless crystalline powder, melting point 250ºC (decomposition). Insoluble in ethanol and general organic solvents, slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in aqueous solutions of sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate . Soluble in more than 5% inorganic acid, and 160 parts boiling water. Its alkali salts are soluble in water.
EDTA is a reagent widely used in complexometric titration in analytical chemistry. Its scientific name is ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid. It is a chelating agent containing carboxyl and amino groups, and can form chelates with many substances to facilitate titration analysis of solutions.
In chemical analysis, in addition to complexometric titration, it is widely used as a masking agent in various separation and determination methods. EDTA is often used to form chelates with metal ions and can be divided into acid and base forms. It forms colorless chelates with colorless metal ions and darker chelates with non-ferrous metal ions in general.
EDTA is an important complexing agent. EDTA has a wide range of uses. It can be used as bleaching fixing solution for color photosensitive material flushing, dyeing agent, fiber processing agent, cosmetic additive, blood anticoagulant, detergent, stabilizer, synthetic rubber polymerization initiator. EDTA is the representative substance of chelating agent. It can form stable water-soluble complexes with alkaline earth metals, rare earth elements and transition metals. In addition to sodium salts, there are ammonium salts and various salts such as iron, magnesium, calcium, copper, manganese, zinc, cobalt, and aluminum, all of which have different uses. EDTA can also be used to detoxify harmful radioactive metals by rapidly excreting them from the body. It is also a water treatment agent. EDTA is also an important indicator, but it is used to titrate metals such as nickel and copper.
